Why Does This Poor Kid Have To Serve Any Time At All?
It was just an accident.
That stupid hiker shouldn’t have been hiking around where people hunt bears.
MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (AP) — A teenage hunter who shot and killed a hiker he mistook for a bear has been sentenced to 30 days in juvenile detention and 120 hours of community service.
Tyler J. Kales, then 14, was hunting with his older brother in August when he shot 54-year-old Pamela Almli of Oso. She was trekking on a popular Sauk mountain hiking trail north of Seattle.
Kales, who has since turned 15, apologized to the victim’s family at Friday’s sentencing and said he hopes they can forgive him.
The victim’s sister, Gail Blacker, told him that “in one second you destroyed everything.”
The boy was convicted last month of second-degree manslaughter with a firearm. Skagit County Superior Court Judge Susan Cook also sentenced him to a year of probation and said his community service must include four hours of training in hunting safety.

Are The Police In Georgia (the Country, Not The Usa’s State) Brave, Or Just Crazy?
Unarmed town turns back Russian troops

SACHKHERE, Georgia — When a group of Russian soldiers drove up to the outskirts of this small town tucked away in the verdant folds of the Caucasus Mountains, Georgians here had no means to stop them — no guns, no armor, no barricades.
But locals knew what had happened in nearby Georgian villages when Russian soldiers swept in. Armed South Ossetian, Chechen and Cossack men came in as well and ravaged those villages in a looting spree that left scores of homes in flames.
So the people of Sachkhere said no.
Earlier this week, more than 250 Sachkhere Georgians amassed to block the town’s main road in the event that Russian troops tried to enter Sachkhere by force. At a police checkpoint outside the town, local Georgian police, unarmed, flatly told the Russian troops they would not be allowed into town.
“I was really surprised they didn’t break through,” said Andro Kaprindashvili, an official at Sachkhere’s military training school, which locals believe was the Russian troops’ reason for demanding entry. “It was also surprising that they paid attention to the civil protests, because they usually aren’t fazed by that.
“But our strength now is just our people. That’s all we have.”
The standoff amounted to a small victory — perhaps only a temporary one — but a victory nonetheless for a country where military installations have been overrun by Russian troops, from Georgia’s naval ships in the Black Sea port of Poti to its military bases in Senaki and Gori.
How long Georgians in Sachkhere can stave off a Russian sweep through their town remains to be seen. Down the road from the town, dozens of Russian tanks and armored personnel carriers, along with a large contingent of Russian troops, have positioned themselves in a forest glade.
Russian troops and armored vehicles continue to occupy central and western Georgia, despite the Kremlin’s insistence that it is in the midst of withdrawing its troops.
In the face of mounting pressure from the international community, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev had pledged to pull back Russian troops from Georgia by Friday. Outside Sachkhere and throughout central Georgia, however, Russian troops could be seen digging trenches and building fortifications, a sign that they will hunker down deep within Georgian territory despite Medvedev’s pledge.
The cease-fire signed by Medvedev and Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili requires both sides to move their forces back to positions they held before the conflict began. The agreement permits Russia to maintain peacekeeping troops around Georgia’s borders with South Ossetia and another breakaway enclave, Abkhazia on the Black Sea coast.
But Russian soldiers were digging trenches and building fortifications far from the separatist enclaves. On Thursday, Russian soldiers were digging trenches on a hillside near Igoeti, just 30 miles west of Tbilisi, Georgia’s capital.
